A well-fitted outfit begins with accurate measurements. Whether you're a seasoned drag queen or just diving into the world of fashion, our guide helps you measure yourself with precision so our patterns fit flawlessly.
Tools You Will Need
Before you begin, gather the following:
- Soft measuring tape – Flexible for measuring curves and contours.
- Full-length mirror – Helps ensure the tape stays level and accurate.
- A friend (optional) – Helpful for hard-to-reach measurements.
General Tips Before You Begin
- Pad up: If you're sewing for drag, wear your hip pads, bra, or breastplate. Others should wear thin clothing.
- Stand straight: Maintain natural posture for accurate measurements.
-
Measure based on fabric type:
Stretch garments – take snug measurements.
Non-stretch garments – add 1 inch to circumference for ease. - Keep tape snug: The tape should be close but not tight – one finger should fit underneath.
- Measure twice: Double-check for accuracy.
How to Measure
- Bust: Stand naturally. Measure the fullest part, keeping tape level across your back.
- Waist: Measure around your natural waist, typically above the navel.
- Hips: With heels together, measure the fullest part, about 7–9 inches below the waist.
- Height: Stand straight against a wall without shoes. Mark and measure from floor to top of head.
Additional Measurements for Alterations
- Neck: Around the base where the neck meets the shoulders.
- Bicep: Around the fullest part of the upper arm while relaxed.
- Knee: Around the midpoint over the kneecap while standing.
- Ankle: Around the narrowest part just above the ankle bone.
- Torso Length: From the top shoulder seam down to the waistline at the front center.
