Choosing the right thread is just as important as choosing the right needle, especially when sewing stretch garments.

For most stretch patterns, use 100% polyester thread. Polyester has slight give, strong durability, and holds up better under tension than cotton thread. It is ideal for garments that stretch, move, and perform on stage. You do not need stretch threads.

For sewing machines, Gütermann polyester thread is one of the best options. It runs smoothly, produces consistent tension, and reduces breakage. For sergers, Maxi-Lock is a reliable choice that feeds cleanly through loopers and maintains stretch.

Avoid 100% cotton thread for stretch fabrics. Cotton has very little elasticity and can snap when the garment stretches.

Investing in high quality thread saves time and frustration. Cheap thread often causes tension problems, lint buildup, and breakage, which leads to unnecessary troubleshooting.

Always test your stitches on scrap fabric before sewing your final garment and refer to your sewing machine manual for recommended thread guidance.
