Adding a diamond crotch gusset to a stretch catsuit or leggings improves mobility, comfort, and durability. A gusset reduces stress on seams and helps prevent tearing during movement or performance.
What Is a Diamond Gusset?
The gusset pattern piece is typically half of a football shaped diamond and is cut on the fold to create a full symmetrical diamond shape.
Step 1: Attach the Gusset to the Back
With right sides facing, align the center fold of the diamond gusset to the center back seam. Match the edges and pin each side down to the notches. Sew using a stretch stitch or serger.
Step 2: Sew the Outer Leg Seams
Close the outer leg seams of the garment before attaching the front portion of the gusset.
Step 3: Attach the Gusset to the Front
Start at the center front and pin along each side of the gusset down to the notch and into the inner leg seams. Sew using a stretch stitch or serger, ensuring the seams lay flat without twisting.
Adjusting the Gusset Size
If additional room is needed, trace the original gusset shape and extend it evenly on all sides. Fold the pattern piece to ensure symmetry before trimming. Add seam allowance back in and reposition the notches to match the garment seams.
Once installed correctly, your diamond gusset will allow for greater stretch, improved comfort, and stronger seam performance in stretch garments.
