Sewing machine needles come in different types and sizes. Using the correct needle improves stitch quality, prevents skipped stitches, and protects your fabric.

Universal Needles

Best for woven fabrics and stable knits. A general purpose option for cotton, polyester, and basic apparel fabrics.

Ballpoint Needles

Designed for knit fabrics. The rounded tip slides between fibers instead of piercing them, reducing damage and skipped stitches.

Stretch Needles

Best for highly elastic fabrics like spandex, lycra, and athletic knits. They help prevent skipped stitches when sewing very stretchy materials.

Jeans / Denim Needles

Made for thick woven fabrics like denim, canvas, and heavy twill.

Leather Needles

Have a wedge shaped tip designed to pierce leather and vinyl. Do not use on woven fabric unless necessary.

Topstitch Needles

Have a larger eye for thicker thread. Ideal for decorative topstitching and heavy thread.

Needle Sizes

Common sizes include 70/10, 75/11, 80/12, and 90/14. Lower numbers are for lightweight fabrics. Higher numbers are for thicker fabrics.

For most Katkow stretch patterns, a 75/11 or 80/12 stretch needle works well.

Replace your needle regularly. A dull needle can cause skipped stitches, puckering, and fabric damage.
