Adding pointed shoulder inserts creates a dramatic, structured silhouette for drag, cosplay, and performance garments. This method works for pointed shoulder catsuits, bodysuits, jackets, and stretch garments.

Materials Needed

  • Pellon 71F Ultra Firm Interfacing
  • Stretch fabric (shell and lining)
  • Scrap fabric or trimmings for stuffing

Step 1: Create the Structured Pyramid

Cut the interfacing pieces without seam allowance. Place the pieces side by side and sew them together using a zigzag stitch to form a firm pyramid shape. This structure will create the sharp pointed shoulder effect.

Step 2: Sew the Casing

Using the pattern pieces with seam allowance included, sew the outer shell pieces together with right sides facing. Trim any excess bulk. Repeat the same steps to create the lining.

Step 3: Assemble the Insert

Place the shell and lining right sides together and sew all the way around, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the piece right side out.

Insert the interfaced pyramid inside the casing. Add stuffing using scrap fabric or trimmings to help maintain the sharp shape and support the structure. Sew the opening closed.

Step 4: Install the Shoulder Insert

Turn the sleeve wrong side out and expose the sleeve cap seam allowance. Hand sew the shoulder insert to the seam allowance only, matching the sleeve cap of the garment to the sleeve cap of the insert. Do not sew through to the outer garment.

Adjust placement as needed to achieve a clean, sharp point. Repeat for the second sleeve.

This method creates strong, structured pointed shoulders that hold their shape during movement and performance.
