Fabric Pieces
After cutting your fabric, you should have the following pieces: one brim for the shell and one brim for the lining.
Interfacing
For the interfacing, you have two options.
A. If you can find ultra firm interfacing or cardboard the size of the brim, use the same pattern piece to cut the interfacing.
B. For a more sturdy and stiff brim, you can use poster board. Cut it into four pieces and tape them together securely with multiple layers of duct tape to keep the brim stiff.
If you are using fusible interfacing, first fuse the brim interfacing to the wrong side of the lining brim. If you do not have fusible interfacing, you can insert the cardboard later.
Assembling Brim
If you have already fused the interfacing to the lining brim, assemble the brim by gathering the shell and lining brim pieces and stacking them with wrong sides facing each other. Sew them together along the outer edge of the heart using a straight stitch and a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
If you are using cardboard instead, stack the shell and lining right sides together and sew along the outer edge, leaving a small opening unsewn so the cardboard can be inserted later. Turn the brim right side out, insert the cardboard, then edge stitch the opening closed.
Bias Tape Binding
If you are using fusible interfacing, you will need bias tape to finish the outer raw edge, as it will be difficult to flip the brim right side out.
If you are using cardboard, once the shell and lining are sewn together and turned right side out, you can finish the inner circle.
For the inner circle, add bias tape or trim around the inner edge to cover any raw edges. Leave the excess seam fabric in place so it remains soft and flexible, allowing you to glue or insert hairpins and clips into the seam allowance fabric.
