If you are sewing Katkow stretch patterns, you do not need an expensive industrial machine. A basic domestic sewing machine is completely fine, as long as it can sew stretch stitches.
Look for a machine that includes:
- A zigzag stitch
- A lightning bolt stretch stitch
- Adjustable stitch width and length
- Adjustable tension
These are the minimum requirements for sewing four way stretch fabrics like spandex, lycra, and stretch velvet.
A serger is optional. It gives a cleaner inside finish and faster construction, but it is not required. All of our stretch patterns can be sewn entirely on a regular sewing machine using stretch stitches.
For best results, pair your machine with:
- Ballpoint or stretch needles
- Polyester thread (Gütermann)
- Proper tension testing before sewing your final garment
The most important factor is not the price of the machine. It is understanding how to adjust your tension and stitch settings for stretch fabrics.
If you are brand new, start by practicing on scrap fabric before sewing your final piece.
