A serger (also called an overlocker) is a machine that trims the fabric edge and stitches it at the same time. It creates a clean, professional finish on the inside of garments and prevents fabric from fraying.

Serger machines can be used for both stretch and non-stretch fabrics. They are especially useful for stretch garments because they create strong, flexible seams that move with the body.

You do not need a serger to sew Katkow patterns. All garments can be sewn on a regular sewing machine using stretch stitches, then finished with a zigzag stitch if needed.

A serger is helpful if you want:

  • Faster construction
  • Cleaner inside seams
  • Strong, stretchy seam finishes
  • Reduced fabric fraying

If you are new to sewing, start with a regular sewing machine first. Once you are comfortable and sewing more frequently, a serger is a strong recommended upgrade, but it is not necessary when you are just starting out.
